This is a beach cafe, so you will need to go up to the bar and order but that shouldn't put you off. It's a short but lovely walk here from the centre of Salcombe, and the kids always love it. They enjoy playing with the dressing-up box, even though really they have outgrown both it and the sandpit! The baguettes are fresh and filling; the seafood platter terrific value for two.
No visit to Salcombe is complete without lunch at The Prawn!

Review by DevonBobby (26 July 2011)

Although we live in Salcombe we tend to go to the Winking Prawn as a lunchtime venue whenever the family are visiting. The service, quality of food and friendly happy atmosphere never fail us. All the staff work so hard to make everything run on oiled wheels which is no mean feat considering the amount of folk that go there. Right opposite North Sands beach with glorious views there really is nowhere finer. if the weather precludes sitting outside there is an indoor 'restaurant' and during busy months an extra covered area. Don't be put off by the queues waiting to give their order, it really is worth it and extremely child friendly. The proprietors are very hands on and work hard to make it what it is. A great asset to Salcombe. One word of advice, if you wish to eat there in the evening - which is delightful and atmospheric - you MUST book, sometimes several weeks ahead during school holidays etc! They also serve a 'self service' breakfast to die for!

Review by Woodingsd (15 May 2011)

The place is really lovely, with fantastic views. It has the ideal vista for any time of day or night. We ate there, myself and my husband twice on our holiday, both at night and had the set meal barbeque. The food was great, well cooked, plenty of it, qood quality and really tasty. We had the set meal barbeque with choice of 2 mains, salad, bread, but it also came with new potatoes and was complimented with ice-cream and we also had an alcoholic drink to finish. It is just over the road from the beach and has a perfect setting. We stayed on the beach all afternoon then mozied on over to have a lovely meal and watch the water come in closer and the sun go down. The beach there is lovely and sandy and the water was nice and warm. We enjoyed the outside part which has been made in to a man made pebble beach, with wooden tables and benches and umbrellas and has a really holiday feel to it. There is also an inside restaurant though as I don't imagine it is like we found it all the time.
A lovely place, great atmosphere, great service and great food. There is also free parking.

The winking prawn is amazing and I love it. Every time I go to Devon that’s the place I eat at. The atmosphere is great and the hosts are so welcoming. They serve fantastic food, the best popcorn shrimp I’ve ever tasted. If you visit Salcombe anytime soon The Winking Prawn is the restaurant to eat at.

We visited the WInking Prawn, whilst staying in Salcombe. We had booked a table for the evening and as we approach the Winking Prawn, it looked very pretty all lite up. It was really tastfully decorated inside, lovely atmostphere, very beach cafe with a twist. The service was very good and so was the food, would definately recommend to all ages. Will be visiting again

Have been visiting Salcombe for many years and have seen the Winking Prawn change hands many times over the years. The current owners have transformed the establishment to represent a really well kept and well managed business. The outdoor seating area has been tastefully arranged with pebbles and nice tablea & chairs. We booked an evening meal and we were not disappointed . The food was excellent, my wife commented that the creme brulee was the best she had ever tasted. With drinks the bill came to just under £80 for the two of us, not cheap but the food & service was as good if not better than many upmarket establishments where i have paid more. Would recommend that you book a table to avoid disappointment.

This is one of the best finds ever. Grandchildren just love dressing up. Food was fantastic; no wonder we had to book months in advance. Could get in the first year we holidayed at Salcombe. See you again on August at 6.30, ten of us!

Review by Liz C (6 June 2009)

We were driving around looking for a beach front restaurant. Something that did not serve fish and chips and all day breakfast. A family of four, youngest being 7, were made very welcome and the food was fantastic. I am a non-meat eater and asked if I could have a selection of starters. All were great, especially the king prawns. Will make sure I re-visit.

Review by Ben & Liz (24 April 2009)

We have been visiting Salcombe and The Winking Prawn for nearly 6 years now and love the restaurant so much that we held our wedding reception there nearly 3 years ago - it was a brilliant evening and all our guests loved both the food and the venue. Mark and his team never fail to make us feel welcome and the food has only been perfect. We hope to move to the area next year and cannot wait for it to become our 'local' restaurant.

We went there on a sunny Thursday and it was warm enough to sit outside. The prawns were fabulous and well presented; it was good to see some locally sourced cheese on the menu. This restaurant is in an ideal location and the place was full when we visited. We will be back in early June.

Wow! What else can I say - I have just come back from a weekend in the truly beautiful Salcombe, and had the total fine dining experience at this lovely restaurant by the sea. It offers exquisite food, and beautiful views, and the staff are lovely - what else could a lady ask for? Needless to say, I shall be returning and would strongly advice anyone else, who has the fortune to be nearby, to do so too.

Every time I go to the Winking Prawn, I feel like Royalty - the friendly and professional staff constantly look after you. The food is always fantastic and I wish I lived closer so I could eat there more often.

Review by Graham Burton (17 February 2008)

It's difficult to find words to describe this restaurant – it’s fantastic. With young children, it is sometimes difficult to find places to take them - where they are welcomed and encouraged to play and have fun. This is such a family friendly place. The staff are so warm and friendly, and nothing seems to be too much trouble. It is also refreshing to have such a good menu. Gone are the chicken nuggets and burgers and in place there is a selection of homemade, fresh meals and snacks that are extremely tasty and good value. This restaurant makes you feel like you are on holiday. In the evenings, the hospitality does not stop. The menu caters for all tastes and budgets, and once again, the quality of the food is outstanding. This is a place to relax for a romantic evening, meet groups of friends, make new friends or catch a glimpse of a TV celebrity as they unwind. This is the place for all. It has no airs or graces, just refreshing honesty. I can't recommend this place enough. This is the best of British.

Review by Keith (16 February 2008)

If you've never been to Salcombe before then I can whole-heartedly recommend The Winking Prawn as it is truly one of the south coast's best kept secrets. My partner and I dined there last summer and both the food and the atmosphere was beyond reproach. We only spent the weekend in Salcombe and had originally planned to sample some other local fare, but once we had spent the evening there we simply had to repeat the experience on the second night. Located just outside of the small town right by the beach the restaurant is as impeccable as the locale where it sits.

I find the review by RH very interesting. I do not consider myself a holiday maker but I do earn my money just as hard as anyone else and spend it in many fine restaurants of which I firmly place the this one within the select few of my 'special places' for special times.
I wish Jane and Mark all the best because that is exactly what you get there.

Review by Alexander Meyer (14 February 2008)

I don't normally write reviews for restaurants but I felt compelled to add my opinion of The Winking Prawn following a recent staff social that my colleagues and I attended. From the outset and throughout, the service was never less than exceptional. The food was delicious, delivered promptly and fantastic value. I know I speak for my entire group when I commend the friendly and professional staff for the fantastic atmosphere that they clearly work hard to cultivate. Relaxed and hospitable, the entire event was one that I shall remember fondly and I recommend this superb restaurant to all.

Review by Aubrey (13 February 2008)

I have been to many reasturants in my time and I feel the winking prawn stands high above all. The food is always fresh and delicious and I particularly enjoyed my chips - for dinner, my wife had a dover sole for the first time and loved it, it was cooked beautifuly and the waiterss was happy to show her how to eat it which was very amusing! It is a wonderful place, the waiting staff are always at hand and never fail to be polite and welcoming, and the picturesque location was superb. I will definitely return in the summer, specially for the chips and ice cream.

Surely there can't be two Winking Prawns in such a small town? I am a regular visitor to "The Prawn" and I can honestly say I have never had a less than fabulous evening! So much so, that I confess that although I visit Salcombe on a regular basis, I have never eaten an evening meal in any other restaurant there. The staff are fantastic, nothing is too much trouble. The setting is beautiful and the restaurant is well run, relaxed and comfortable. The food is simple, beautifully presented and delicious.
Whenever I am in town I always make a beeline for The Winking Prawn, and I am never disappointed. Team Prawn you rock!

Review by Arrabella Gordon Meyer (13 February 2008)

I feel it only appropriate to give The Winking Prawn the credit it deserves. The staff are friendly - they make time for us every single visit, they know our children and make a fuss over us. It is an outstanding family business - the daughter Lucy is outstanding with her customer service and always on hand. They don't ever protest to be a full cordon bleu restaurant, it's simple good food, and the restaurant out of season, is full of locals. They don’t close there doors to customers out of season. Summer is also perfect when two or up to twenty of us have dined in the garden with the simple steak and prawn Barbie which I love!

Review by Mark (14 November 2007)

I would recommend the Winking Prawn to all. Never have I been so welcomed in to by any other restaurant. We had lunch and decided to stay around until dinner on the off chance they had a free space, and they did. The food is exceptional and the waiting staff personable, and always on hand, to hand you the fancy dress when required. The beer is fantastic and all food was fresh and immaculately presented. Just go!

Nights at The Winking Prawn usually end late and result in a monster hangover. The food is fantastic and the overall atmosphere will delight both young and old, thanks to a jam packed dressing up box. Leave your ego at the door and join in the fun - I guarantee that neither the food nor the ambiance will disappoint.
